Is the Italian Fashion Industry on its knees?

Is the Italian Fashion Industry on its knees?

Valentino

French design houses seem to be blossoming while their Italian counterparts appear to struggle. Italian Fashion Houses have long been forced to sell to the French fashion giants. It is no secret that beloved Italian brand Fendi, is marginally controlled by French conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy. Dolce and Gabbana latest catwalk show may have delighted fashion darlings around the globe, yet is their legal woes that are keeping many guessing and kept insiders alike speculating as to where D&G’s road will lead. After being convicted for tax evasion, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana were sentenced each for 20 months respectively. While their defence team doubt that they will serve any jail time, critics have raised their concerns and voiced that the scandal may spell the end of the glorious Brand that is Dolce and Gabbana. And indeed, the pair have stated that an unsuccessful appeal of the verdict may well in fact spell the end for them. But they aren’t alone; powerhouses such as Versace have long lost their supreme aura of decadence. Gianni Versace designs embodied the great years of the late 80′s and early 90′s. Since his death, Versace has considerably struggled to keep its profits afloat. Gucci also drew up losses in revenue the past few years. It may seem that Italian fashion may have lost his magic touch. Has the  ‘Made in Italy’ Tag become a deterrent to buyers?

Andrea Pompilio

However, not all may be lost.  Emerging Italian Designers such as Andrea Pompilio who has recently been chosen by Armani to show his collection at Via Bergognone during last Men’s Fashion Week in Milan is indicating a promising future. New Italian designers include, Andrea Incontri, Francesca Liberatore and Mauro Gasperi, who are all setting a new tone in the Fashion world. Hopefully we’ll all be soon celebrating the revival of Italian Fashion.
