Is Croydon the new home of Shopping?

New York, Paris, Tokyo… Croydon?

In September earlier this year the Croydon Village Outlet centre opened its doors to the public. Being a mammoth  530,000 sq ft shopping centre it is the largest outlet centre in the UK and features brands such as Boohoo, Kurt Geiger and Ralph Lauren. The shopping centre has provided a large amount of jobs in the area and also gives shoppers opportunity to grab a few bargains with some concessions offering anything up to 75% off designer brands. But Croydon haven’t stopped there.

Yesterday the London Borough of Corydon’s Strategic Planning Committee announced plans to develop the existing Whitgift centre to create a 1.5 million sq ft shopping centre right in the centre of Croydon. The new project that is a partnership between retail giant Westfield and property developer Hammerson is said to produce over 5,000 job opportunities within Croydon and surrounding areas. Not only this the project will put the degenerating Croydon city centre back on the map and establish it as a shopping destination across the globe.

Although looking promising the large shopping centre still hasn’t quite been given the all clear. The project first must be proposed to the Mayor of London who has the final say on whether this will be given the go ahead, if so then the scheme is projected to start as early as 2015. So if plans go ahead Croydon will be home to the largest UK outlet centre and 2nd largest shopping centre in the UK. Who knows what else the future holds for the Greater London town.
